Different Types Of Radio Personalities – Lesson Seven

There are basically six types of radio personalities. These include humorous and non-humorous personalities. Just because you’re not a humorous announcer, it doesn’t mean you can’t be a popular announcer. Many announcers don’t use any humor in their show and they still have big ratings. I’m telling you this from personal experience. I have always been what they call a ‘time and temp’ type of announcer, but I had the number one show for quite a while! Most people tune into the radio to hear their music. They want an announcer who will talk with them and not at them.

The best way to get ratings and jobs, in this business, is to be a smooth, natural and communicative announcer. You should work on this before you start to add humor to your show. If you know how to be an all around basic announcer, there are usually more opportunities open to you in both radio and commercial voice-over production.

Personality Categories:

Basic Announcer

This type of announcer really runs no risk of being offensive to anyone. Presenting the music in a consistent professional manner and giving the listener useful and entertaining information is the main goal of this announcer. This type of an announcer is a professional and can go a long way in broadcasting. Major markets are full of these type of announcers.

Communicator Announcer

The communicator announcer style is very one to one. Every break is written and rehearsed. This announcer is very much like the basic announcer except more information is given. Information such as artist bios, facts about the songs, and public service announcements. These are all brought into the show in a very comfortable, natural, and communicative style.

Information Announcer

The information announcer has something very definite to say. It can range from sports scores to human interest stories. This type of announcer is very one to one and knows what the listening audience wants to hear.

One-Liner Humor Announcer

This type of announcer is suited for most all time slots in the broadcasting day. Most all of the breaks are planned, written, and rehearsed. This type of announcer, like all of the others mentioned so far, can fit into almost all musical formats.

Rapper Announcer

This type of announcer is a talker, but the music is still the main focus of the show. The rapper’s jokes tend to be longer and more structured than the one-liners announcer’s jokes. This type of announcer is good for morning-drive, mid-day, and afternoon-drive slots. This type of announcer also has a very friendly announcing style.

Bizarre Humor Announcer

This type of announcer uses “off the wall” type of humor. Anything goes for this announcer. There’s usually a cast of characters in the show and usually two or three other people working with the announcer. Even though this type of announcer is long winded, everything in the show is written and rehearsed. Most people tune in to hear this announcer, as well as the music.

No matter what type of announcer you are striving to become, always remember the most important rules of radio announcing.

  • Be one to one with your audience.
  • Don’t detract from the music.
  • The best ad lib is a written ad lib.
  • Never go on the air unprepared.
